A courageous showing has seen Newcastle Jets eradicate its four-game winless streak, triumphing over Gold Coast United 3-2 in scorching temperatures at Ausgrid Stadium on Wednesday to instil confidence in the playing group.

With captain Jobe Wheelhouse absent, striker Ryan Griffiths took over the reins in last night’s victory, playing a pivotal role in setting up Labinot Haliti’s winner near the death.

“When Gold Coast scored their second goal I nearly busted a lung yelling at the back,” Griffiths said.

“I just thought to myself it is not going to happen but we bounced back straight away which showed good character by the boys."

Despite winning its first game since week 10, Griffiths believes the team still has many areas where it must improve rapidly.

“The emphasis at training this week has been on doing you job and if you do your job right we will get results, and I think that is what happened,” he revealed.

“We showed a lot more confidence against Gold Coast and that is only going to get better.

“I was happy with the work rate and effort shown by the boys and hopefully we can go to Melbourne do the same thing.”

The Novocastrians will face Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park on Saturday, with the notion of upsetting the besieged former champions, who dwindle in eighth position on the A-League table.
