Sydney FC goalkeeper Liam Reddy has been sacked by the club for his alcohol related misconduct before their recent final.

Reddy admitted to drinking on the flight to New Zealand for their clash with the Wellington Phoenix, prompting Sydney officials to immediately send him back home.

The 30-year-old’s behaviour left the Sky Blues with little choice but to terminate his contract, despite it having one year remaining.

After meeting with Reddy Thursday morning, Sydney says it weighed up the situation and their options before making the decision to sack him.

"Sydney FC today terminated the employment and contract of Liam Reddy following incidents that took place before, during and after a flight to Wellington before the recent semi-final,'' acting chief executive Stefan Kamasz said in a statement according to foxsports.com.au.

"Those actions represented serious misconduct and do not reflect the actions we believe to be appropriate for a professional football player with Sydney FC.''

Sydney lost the elimination match with Wellington 3 – 2, and must now search for a goalkeeping replacement ahead of the next A-League season.
