Champions Juventus earned a comfortable 3-1 home win against Atalanta, which ensured they finish the 2011/2012 Serie A season unbeaten. Atalanta had the first chance of the match in the 2nd minute, when German Denis made a turn and shot on goal only to find goalkeeper Marco Storari on the ball’s path. Juventus responded five minutes later, as captain Alessandro Del Piero launched a long ball for Marco Borriello, whose shot lacked precision and went out. The home side did go in front three minutes after that, and once again Borriello was involved. The big striker created space for himself in the area and played a delightful back-heeled pass for Luca Marrone, who fired the ball in with a powerful diagonal shot. In the 16th minute, Juve came close to scoring again, as Simone Padoin made a run into the area and, instead of trying a shot from a good position, played it back to Del Piero, who was well-marked by the Atalanta defence. Just before the half hour mark, Del Piero made it 2-0 for the hosts, firing a low shot from outside the area that went past goalkeeper Giorgio Frezzolini. Atalanta quickly responded a couple of minutes later, as Denis made a nice run, going past Giorgio Chiellini, but his final shot with his left foot went well over the bar. The former Napoli midfielder was dangerous again for the visitors in the 33rd minute, when he played in a nice ball into the area for Riccardo Cazzola, forcing Chiellini to make a difficult tackle to clear the ball. Juve were dangerous again a minute before half time, when Padoin fired a sudden, powerful shot from inside the area, but his shot was very well saved by Frezzolini. The second half began with no changes in either side. Atalanta showed some good spirit early on, and in the 57th minute Minotti fired a fine shot from outside the area that was deflected for a corner by Leonardo Bonucci. Del Piero, playing his last league match for the club, was substituted on the hour mark to a rousing applause, and clearly showed his emotion as he was taken off for Simone Pepe. Five minutes later, the visitors came close again as Bonaventura fired a powerful diagonal shot that had to be deflected on the post by Storari. In the 75th minute, Juve threatened as Fabio Quagliarella fired a right-footed shot that was dangerously deflected, but Frezzolini managed to keep it out. Atalanta reduced their deficit in the 83rd minute, when on a cross by Manolo Gabbiadini, Stephan Lichtsteiner deflected the ball into his own net in an attempt to anticipate Carmona. However, the hosts restored their two-goal lead in the 90th minute, when they were awarded a penalty for a foul by Thomas Manfredini on Borriello. Andrea Barzagli stepped up to take the penalty and scored with a high, powerful shot. Thus, Juventus capped off their impressive title-winning season with another win, which ensured they finish the league season unbeaten. |
