The title may be sewn up, but Tito Vilanova's men want to finish the season on a high note...

Sunday 19 May 2013

Barcelona secured their fourth domestic league title in five seasons with a 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid. Even though their opposition may have had more thoughts on their impending Copa del Rey Final against local rivals Real Madrid, the Blaugrana were still good enough to overcome them. However, the biggest concern to come out of the match was that Lionel Messi limped off with an injury. The Argentine won't be seen for the remainder of the season, joining captain Carles Puyol on the sidelines. Xavi and Sergio Busquets will also return to the starting XI.

Valladolid also secured something last week: their participation in Spain's top-flight for next season. Beating Deportivo La Coruna last weekend 1-0 thanks to Javi Garcia's second-half strike, the side is now aiming to finish off strongly. Omar Ramos returns from suspension, but Antonio Rukavina was shown his fifth yellow card for the campaign, meaning he'll miss this match. Henrique Sereno may take his spot in defence.

Hard to go by Barcelona.

Prediction: Barcelona 2-0 Real Valladolid

Serie A Round 38 Preview: Roma v Napoli
Goran+Pandev+SSC+Napoli+v+Roma+Serie+PN_b2ahtth2l.jpg

Roma's focus will be to leapfrog cross-town rivals Lazio on the ladder whilst Napoli want to end the season on a high, as both teams meet on Sunday...

Sunday 19 May 2013

Roma's season has been as tumultuous as a rollercoaster ride after eating several hotdogs. And the past three matches by the Giallorossi has exactly shown this. Winning away against Fiorentina before losing at home to Chievo, Andrea Andreazzoli's men put up a stern fight to hold Milan to a scoreless draw last weekend. Add to this that a contentious penalty could have been awarded to the Lupi, and the result could have gone another way. However, losing inspirational captain Francesco Totti at the very end after elbowing former team-mate Philippe Mexes. Miralem Pjanic made an appearance off the bench for the clash against the Rossoneri, and should start on Sunday.

Napoli have won eight of their past nine Serie A matches, and are flying! Speculation has intensified over whether coach Walter Mazzarri will remain with the club beyond June 30, as he is a sought-after tactician. Not only is their much-admired attack led by Edinson Cavani working at full capacity, but it is the Partenopei defence which is running optimally. Conceding only five goals in six matches, Mazzarri has gotten the right mix. But the Azzurri did have to do it the hard way against Siena last weekend, allowing the Robur to take the lead, and then leaving it until the final minutes to grab the win thanks to Marek Hamsik.

Consistency will see Napoli grab a result here, but Roma have put in strong performances against the big teams this term.

Prediction: Roma 1-2 Napoli

Arsenal 4-1 Wigan Athletic: Podolski brace relegates Latics

Wigan's week may have seen it lift their first FA Cup, but it ended on a sour note as they were relegated from the English Premier League, losing 4-1 to Arsenal.

The Gunners were also aiming to keep themselves in the running for a Champions League spot for next season.

Lukas Podolski capitalised on some poor defending to give the home side the lead before a Shaun Maloney free-kick levelled proceedings before half-time. Theo Walcott, Aaron Ramsey and another striker from the German ensured the points would be staying with Arsene Wenger's men.

The German gave Arsenal the lead on 10 minutes when he nodded home a bouncing header from a Santi Cazorla corner.

But the lead only lasted half an hour as Shaun Maloney stepped up to take a free-kick from the edge of the area. Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny had no chance to prevent the ball from finding the bottom corner.

And it was the Latics that were trying to emulate some of their heroics from last Saturday against Manchester City when Arouna Kone's close-range attempt almost found a way past Szczesny. James McCarthy did manage to put the ball in the back of the net, but it was chalked off for offside.

Theo Walcott prodded home another Cazorla cross from the right wing just after the hour mark to take a handy 2-1 lead.

And all hopes of a Wigan comeback were quashed when Podolski grabbed his second goal of the game, as he once against headed from a Santi Cazorla involvement, dinking over the advancing 'keeper.

Aaron Ramsey ensured the points with 20 minutes remaining on the clock when his low, driving shot snuck in at the near post.

Wigan became the thirs and final team to be relegated this season, joining Reading and QPR, whilst Arsenal move into fourth position on 70 points.

ANALYSIS AND TEAM NEWS

City’s last FA Cup final triumph at Wembley two years ago against Stoke sparked wild celebrations from a group of support which had been deprived of witnessing their side collect silverware in 35 years. A similar result in Saturday’s fixture will serve as a mere consolation to many, who have seen their side unable to replicate the form that earned them the Premier League last season. A disappointing exit from the UEFA Champions League earlier in the season adds extra pressure on Roberto Mancini’s men to deliver. They have swept aside Watford, Stoke City, Leeds United, Barnsley and cup holders Chelsea to reach the final..

Wigan on the other hand have overcome lower ranked sides, but for Everton, whom they overcame in the Quarter Finals of this season’s instalment. Bournemouth, Macclesfield Town, Huddersfield Town and Millwall have are the other sides who have succumbed to the Latics.

In normal circumstances, their participation in their first FA Cup final would appear to be their main concern, but their continued existence in the Premier League is currently a more impending matter. Martinez’s men are in the relegation zone and will be hoping that a decent performance at Wembley will inspire a bright finish to the season. Wigan will take solace from the fact that they have sealed a spot in next season’s 2013/14 Europa League, notwithstanding the result on Saturday.

Manchester City will have the services of key midfielder Yaya Toure, who sat out the midweek fixture against West Bromwich Albion in preparation for his date at Wembley.

Scott Sinclair is the only player who is guaranteed to miss the match, as he recovers from recent surgery.

Joe Hart is set to miss out, with Costel Pantilimion seemingly likely to take his place between the posts for Mancini. The decision to start Samir Nasri or James Milner will prove to be a difficult one, but the latter’s outstanding form of late may mean he gets the nod.

Wigan’s leaky defence has given Martinez a few selection headaches, with skipper Gary Caldwell and Roger Espinoza’s recent performances instilling a heap of doubt into the back four. James McCarthy’s impressive season will make him an important figure, while ex-Celtic man Shaun Maloney, whose contribution against Milwall earned him praise will be hoping to make a similar mark. Aroune Kone will need to step up to trouble the best defence in the league, which will feature the likes of Vincent Kompany and Matija Nastasic.

Oman’s Ali Al-Habsi looks certain to replace Joel Robles in goal.

Wigan will know that a one-off cup tie can always go either way, but with Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez leading the front line for City, coupled with a resolute defence, Wigan may well have their work well and truly cut out.

La Liga Round 35 Preview: Atletico Madrid v Barcelona

Third will host the league leaders, but plenty at stake to play for...

Sunday 12 May 2013

Barcelona's equation is simple: beat third-placed Atletico Madrid and they will claim their fourth La Liga title in five years. And there is plenty of good news surrounding the club, as Sergio Busquets and Pedro look like comsing straight into the line-up, as both have regained full fitness. Goalkeeper Jose Pinto could also see some league action, as Victor Valdes's injured foot has not healed in time. Javier Mascherano has returned to training this week, but is unlikely to play. The Blaugrana will also want to sew up the domestic as fast as possible, to completely put behind them what happened in the semi-final of the Champions League.

Atletico have been going about their business in the usual fashion, and secured a spot in next season's major European competition with a midweek 3-1 away win over Celta Vigo. And the reason that the Rojiblancos played Celta earlier than anticipated (as that game was scheduled for Week 36) is because of the impeding Madrid derby and Copa del Rey final. Diego Simeone may opt to rest several key stars for this clash, with the aim of claiming another piece of silverware.

it could be the Radamel Falcao versus Lionel Messi show if both superstars are selected.

Prediction: Atletico Madrid 1-2 Barcelona
