Central Coast Mariners 1-0 Melbourne Victory: McBreen gives Mariners crack at championship

Central Coast Mariners have given themselves another chance of winning their maiden A-League Championship by seeing off Melbourne Victory at Bluetongue Stadium on Sunday. It was a routine left-foot lashing from Daniel McBreen that proved the difference in the 42nd minute, as Victory couldn’t find the answers in front of goal.

Patrick Zwaanswijk, Pedj Bojic, Josh Rose, Michael McGlinchey, Nick Montgomery and McBreen all started having been left out of the Mariners’ trip to China in the AFC Champions League.

Meanwhile the Victory made only one change to the side that knocked Perth out, with Marcos Flores confining Connor Pain to a substitute’s role.

Melbourne started brightly with some quick, crisp passing but it was the home side who went on to dominate the goal-scoring chances.

In the 14th minute, Zwaanswijk’s flick found Mile Sterjovski onside in the box but his low shot was saved comfortably by Nathan Coe.

The Mariners were almost celebrating in the 26th minute when Coe parried away Trent Sainsbury’s effort. The ball fell to McBreen and Coe was scrambling but the striker flashed it just wide.

Down the other end, Flores slid Rojas through but the Kiwi’s cross was just picked off by Mat Ryan with Archie Thompson arriving at the far post. That was about as good as it got for Victory in the first half.

McGlinchey was Central Coast’s chief driving force and he got in behind Victory on the half-hour mark, laid it back to McBreen but Leijer was able to block the shot with his head.

The Mariners did go ahead three minutes before the break. Bernie Ibini showed excellent poise to see off several Victory challenges in midfield, before finding McBreen 20 yards from goal. The A-League’s top scorer took a touch and left Coe no chance with a net-busting missile.

Victory came out in the second half and kept the ball well in their search for an equaliser. Celeski twice released Thompson with two accurate through balls but the forward couldn’t test Ryan in goal.

It started to open up for the Mariners as Victory pushed forward. With 20 minutes remaining, McBreen broke on the counter and played a ball into Mitch Duke’s path and the substitute blasted it narrowly wide of the post.

Josh Rose had a goal ruled out for offside in the 83rd minute.

Nick Montgomery ruled himself out of the grand final in stoppage time for a second yellow card but Victory couldn’t find a way through as the Mariners booked themselves a date with the Premiers.

Western Sydney Wanderers 2 - 0 Brisbane Roar: Ono wander goal leads A-League debutants into the grand final

The Western Sydney Wanderers will play in the 2012/13 grand final after a highly professional 2 - 0 victory over defending champions Brisbane Roar in the semi-final at Parramatta Stadium. A first-half strike from Dino Kresinger and a wonder goal from Shinji Ono led the Premiers Plate winners into the big dance, but the win was soured by a late send-off to crucial midfielder Youssouf Hersi. They will face either the Central Coast Mariners or Melbourne Victory.

It was a frenetic start from both sides, unsurprising given the enormity of the occasion. Brisbane had much of the early possession, settling into their passing style, while Western Sydney remained typically rigid and well structured in defence.

Impressive feet from Youssouf Hersi led to a couple of inviting free-kick opportunities, but they amounted to nothing in a tightly contested opening quarter-hour.

The first meaningful shot of the contest came from Wanderers’ striker Dino Kresinger. From a standing start on the edge of the box, the big number nine hit a decent driven effort on target.

Moments later, Kresinger was in the right place at the right time to put Western Sydney 1 – 0 ahead in the 16th minute.

From a positive Hersi run, Mark Bridge played a dangerous low cross to Kresinger, who cleverly flicked the ball passed the helpless Michael Theo.

It was just the second goal for the centre-forward this season. The first came against Adelaide United in a 6  - 1 win just prior to Christmas.

The Roar continued to own around sixty percent of possession but were unable to breakdown the A-League’s best defence. The Wanderers looked dangerous on the counter, with Hersi’s speed causing headaches for Mike Mulvey’s men.

Full-back Shannon Cole’s wonderful stepover and cross from the byline almost allowed Hersi to strike, while Bridge’s strong effort off one step was parried by Theo.

Jerome Polenz was surprisingly substituted in the 41st minute, replaced by Tarek Elrich in the right-back position. Polenz didn’t appear to be in any physical discomfort and was a valuable contributor in his defensive post.

The latter stages of the first half were dominated by Western Sydney, who looked capable of putting the game beyond Brisbane’s reach. Although, against the tide, Brisbane could have been given the chance to restore parity.

Luke Brattan was nudged by Yianni Perkatis just inside the box, but the penalty shouts were waved away by referee Alan Milliner.

Hersi failed to hit the target from the top of the box in stoppage time, however he was arguably the most valuable contributor in the opening stanza. Shinji Ono’s class was also coming to the fore, setting up numerous forward thrusts from midfield.

Both sides came strongly out of the blocks following the interval, creating quality goalscoring chances.

Hersi provided a wonderful cross to the back-post that marginally eluded Kresinger, while Ben Halloran fired a powerful swerving shot that appeared to be tipped wide by an outstretched Ante Covic despite no corner being awarded.

Another promising build-up by the Wanderers led to three shots in quick succession from Bridge, Mateo Poljak and Perkatis, with Theo the savior again for Brisbane.

Then it was the Roar’s turn. Mitch Nicols played a delightful ball across the face of goal that couldn’t find a teammate, and he turned provider again to setup Halloran for a glaring sight at an equalizer. He only managed to shoot straight at Covic.

The game was becoming increasingly stretched, a rare sight in a match featuring the Wanderers, particularly at Parramatta Stadium.

Bridge almost doubled the Wanderers’ lead with an audacious right footed curling effort and moments later, Ono capped off a brilliant performance with an even more audacious and clinical finish to make it 2 – 0 in the 71st minute.

On the edge of the box, the Japanese international chipped with his left boot into the far corner – his eighth and undoubtedly best goal of the campaign.

Just as the result looked beyond doubt, Hersi threw a spanner into the works with a rash sliding challenge that prompted his second yellow card and marching orders. It gave Brisbane just over 10 minutes to reverse the two-goal deficit.

Pushing numbers forward to try and provide an unlikely turnaround, Roar full-back Ivan Franjic’s cross almost led to one of the required goals. Enigmatic striker Besart Berisha, closely checked all game, was well marked and sprayed his shot over the bar.

In the 94th minute, a scrambling ball inside the box fell to substitute Kwame Yeboah, but he could only hit the side netting.

Western Sydney’s defence stayed resolute, keeping the match at 2 – 0 and marching into the grand final in their first season.

A-League Semi-Final Preview: Central Coast Mariners v Melbourne Victory

Victory will be reminded of the last time they played in Gosford whilst the Mariners are keen to prove why they deserve to be in the Grand Final...

Sunday 14 April 2013

Central Coast may have been in a similar position as Western Sydney wanderers, but the only major difference with having the week off to rest is that the Mariners were required to travel to Japan to face Guizhou Rehne in an Asian Champions League Group Stage encounter. The result ultimately went against Graham Arnold's men, going down 2-1, but questions about how the team recovers from the jet-lag remain. Despite not taking a full-strength side, several players will be backing up for Sunday's clash.

Melbourne Victory had to do it the hard way in order to qualify for the semi-finals. Conceding a very early to Perth, Ange Postecoglou's men could have had their season ended prematurely had Shane Smeltz converted his spot-kick with minutes remaining. However, the ball ended up at the other end, with Mark Milligan slotting home his penalty and Archie Thompson scoring the winner in extra-time. The big problem for Victory has been their inability to keep clean sheets, and one in 11 outings is not something the side are proud of. And considering the Blue & White were destroyed 6-2 the last time they travelled to Gosford.

Expect a much better performance from the visitors, but at least one goal to be shipped.

Predcition: Central Coast Mariners 2-1 Melbourne Victory

A-League Semi-Final Preview: Western Sydney Wanderers v Brisbane Roar
Ben+Halloran+League+Rd+4+Brisbane+v+Western+VBhAmS8wjSFl.jpg

Western Sydney will be looking to make the Grand Final in order to claim the A-League double whilst Brisbane are wanting the chance to defend their title...

Friday 12 April 2013

Western Sydney are now only 180 minutes from possibly glory. And it is remarkable to think that this side was put together only last June. WSW are on a 12-game unbeaten run, and with a week off last weekend due to finishing atop the A-League standings, the side are primed for a good performance. Shinji Ono and Aaron Mooy were under injury clouds when the team last played - which as against Newcastle - but the duo are raring to go and fully-fit.

Brisbane looked sensational at times against Adelaide United, as the Roar claimed a 2-1 win at Hindmarsh Stadium. However, the victory did come at a cost with Thomas Broich and Jack Hingert hobbling off the field with ankle injuries. Broich may play, but Hingert has been ruled out. This means that should the German fail to come up, more pressure will be heaped on Ben Halloran to step up. Can the Roar defeat the Wanderers, manke their third-consecutive Grand Final and have a chance to go back-to-back-to-back?

The Roar have not beaten the Wanderers in any of the three previous encounters this term.

Prediction: Western Sydney Wanderers 2-1 Brisbane Roar

Adelaide United 1-2 Brisbane Roar: Brattan & Franjic see Roar progress at heavy price
Luke+Brattan+League+Rd+18+Perth+Glory+v+Brisbane+ezeRMLP4AxIx.jpg

Brisbane Roar have kept alive their A-League title defence with a strong 2-1 away win over Adelaide United at Hindmarsh Stadium on Sunday evening.

Luke Brattan's perfectly-time volley just before the half-hour opened the scoring and Ivan Franjic extended the lead just before half-time. Dario Vidosic gave the Reds hope as he grabbed a consolation goal, but the victory has come at a cost with both Thomas Broich and Jack Hingert hobbling off the field with ankle injuiries.

Michael Valkanis opted to bring Jeronimo Neumann into the starting XI to partner Bruce Djite up front whilst Mike Mulvey kept the same 11 players from last week's win over Sydney FC.

Both teams started nervy, with Bruce Djite and Mitch Nichols having long-range, ambitious efforts on goal.

But it was the Roar that settled the quicker as Thomas Broich's free-kicks and a powerful drive from Besart Berisha put pressure on the Adelaide defence and goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic.

Osama Malik's wayward shot relieved a heap of pressure the Reds were pouring on the Brisbane defence after 13 minutes.

And it was only a minute later when Shane Steffanuto's overlapping run saw the wing-back cut a pass back to Berisha, but his tap-in went direct into Galekovic's hands.

Marcelo Carrusca had a glorious chance just before the quarter-hour mark as the ball fell into his path near the penalty spot, but on his wrong foot, the winger skyrocketed his attempt.

Dario Vidosic's prod on target saw Michael Theo stretched to the limit as Brisbane failed to clear their lines and the danger from a cross eight minutes later.

However, Luke Brattan's sweet volley from a Thomas Broich corner from outside the box found a way past the Adelaide defence. Cassio mistimed his goal line clearance, skewing it into the back of the net to give the visitors the lead on 27 minutes.

With his confidence already sky-high, Broich teed up Brattan in another similar situation moments later, but this time, the defensive midfielder's shot went straight into the crowd.

The Queensland-based outfit's momentum was halted with 10 minutes to go in the first-half when Broich's left ankle was accidentally stomped upon. The German came back onto the pitch moments later, but seemed unable to be his crafty self.

Carrusca's teasing cros from the left across the box spotted Vidosic at full-stretch, but the Socceroo couldn't get a final touch to steer it into the net.

But the Roar ensured they would be taking a two-goal lead into half-time as Ivan Franjic stabbed the ball home from inside the six-yard box from a Mitch Nichols cross.

Adelaide started much brighter after the break as Djite got in front of Jade North in the box to tee up Neumann, but the Argentine couldn't aim his attempt on target.

Ben Halloran - who came on at half-time for Broich - should've done better when he was spotted in the penalty area on 53 minutes, but the substitute dragged his shot across goal.

Hingert rolled his ankle when Neumann made a innocuous tackle on him, and came off the pitch after holding his foot for several minutes.

Vidosic attempted to liven up the plateauing crowd minutes later with a strong shot on target, but the Brisbane defence got in the way before the ball could reach goalkeeper Theo.

Stefan Nijland could have sealed the result with 10 minutes left in the match when the Roar marched forward on a counterattack. However, after a scramble in the area, the forward's shot hit the outside of the right post and crumbled into the side-netting.

The Dutchman once again had the chance to extend the Roar's lead from a free-kick in front to goal, but Galekovic dived to his right to parry away the opportunity.

And again Nijland looked to finish off the Reds with seven minutes left on the clock, as his driving shot from the edge of the area went across goal.

Dario Vidosic set up a tense finish as he smashed a ball into the back of the net with only extra-time remaining on the clock. And Tomi Juric almost equalised proceedings very late on, but Theo was up to the moment, parrying away.

The reigning Champions will take on minor Premiers Western Sydney Wanderers at Parramatta Stadium next Friday evening.
